Unterwegs vom Hotel zum Kardiologen-Kongress nahm ich die Metro. Mich überraschte zunächst das gigantische Tonnengewölbe der Washingtoner Underground. Hallen, wie sie in der Berliner U-Bahn undenkbar sind, wirkten zunächst einschüchternd - und das ist sicher auch die Absicht dieser Architektur. Make America great! hat nicht erst Donald Trump erfunden.

Und dann sah ich die Menschen, und es war die gleiche Müdigkeit, das gleiche stoische Warten, das ewig gleiche verliebte Lächeln in ihren Gesichtern, in ihrer Haltung, wie das aller Wartenden und Reisenden in den U-Bahnen dieser Welt.So intim wie universell,das hatte etwas überaus Berührendes und Beruhigendes: die Nähe der Menschen zu spüren.

On my way from the hotel to the convention center, I took the metro. First I was surprised by the gigantic barrel vault of the Washington Underground. Halls unthinkable in the Berlin subway initially seemed intimidating - and that is certainly the intention of this architecture. Make America great! was not the first to invent Donald Trump.

And then I saw the people, and it was the same tiredness, the same stoic waiting, the eternally same loving smile on their faces, in their attitude, like that of all waiting and travelling people in the subways of this world. As intimate as it was universal, there was something very touching and soothing about it: to feel the proximity of people.
